choosing your cat's groom
-
Tangles or mats?
The condition of your cats’ coat will have the biggest impact on the type of groom they need. If their coat is very matted all over, or they are getting old and unable to groom themselves, a full clip or lion cut is likely the best option.
If there is only some knotting or matting then they will more likely benefit from a full groom with some clipping of the matted areas. The aim is to save as much of the natural coat as possible.
-
Clean or dirty fur?
Most cats are excellent at keeping their fur clean, however if they have suffered from fleas, or have a dirty or greasy coat is may be that a wet bath is needed. This will be incorporated with a full groom.
If their fur is mostly clean, then a full groom (dry) with conditioning treatment will be enough to maintain a healthy coat, without the need for a wet bath. This is also a more affordable option and less stressful for the cat.

Long or short haired?
Short haired cats still need grooming, especially if they have thick fur. A full groom (dry) for this coat type will include a foam shampoo to keep their coat clean. A short haired cat should not need clipping.
Long haired cats get tangled coats easily. Sometimes a lion cut or clipping is needed, but most often regular grooms are enough. A conditioning treatment alongside the dry groom will ensure a healthy coat.
caring for your cat
Many cat owners are not aware of the upkeep needed to maintain their cat’s coat. Bringing a cat to the groomer with a knotted or matted coat, or even fleas, is nothing to be ashamed of. As groomers we have seen it all!
Finding a professional cat groomer who specialises in feline treatment will ensure your cat is healthy, happy and comfortable all year long. A cat groomer will be able to advise you on regular coat maintenance, how often grooming is needed and the type of products to avoid. When your cat has a healthy coat and is used to being groomed, brushing your cat in between professional grooms will become a valuable bonding exercise for you both, as well as ensuring mats don’t build up between appointments.
