frequently asked questions

  • Regular grooms ensure your cat is happy, healthy and comfortable. Without specialist grooming, particularly in cats with longer fur or who are older, knotting and mats can quickly form. This leads to discomfort, itching and stress for the cat, as well stopping them from effectively grooming themselves.

Grooming also ensures early detection of fleas or skin issues, keeps your cat's coat healthy, shiny and clean, reduces the build up of dead fur and skin as well as helping reduce the amount of fur and hairballs around your house.

  • Essex Cat Grooming now offers drop-off appointments at our home salon, based in Witham. This is recommended particularly if your cat is difficult or aggressive to groom, as they are less territorial than in their own home.

Free parking is available and our location is off the Witham high street, so you can leave your car and cat while you explore the town, before collecting your cat once their groom is finished.

  • While a full groom is recommended, we can just cut claws for £15 if preferred. The appointment will take 10-15 minutes and can be completed quickly in your own home. This can also be a good introduction to the cat grooming experience.

  • While an estimate quote can be provided based on your description and pictures, the final grooming price can only be confirmed in person. This is because price can vary depending on the cat's size, age, their coat type, whether they have any mats or clipping required and their temperament. An estimated quote is unlikely to vary significantly compared to what you are quoted in person, as long as your cat's condition is as expected.

  • Navigate to the 'Services' section to view a breakdown of services and prices.

For a quote, click any of the 'booking enquiry' buttons or view contact details at the bottom of each page. We would be happy to hear from you and provide a personalised quote based on your cat's grooming requirements.

  • Fleas are common, particularly in outdoor cats, and require regular treatment. If you know or suspect your cats has fleas, take the following steps:

    1. Get proper spot treatment from the vets (over-the-counter treatments are often not strong enough)

    2. Book your cat in for a flea bath and groom with Essex Cat Grooming

    3. Let us know your cat has fleas upon booking so additional guidance and treatment can be offered

Get in touch if you are concerned about fleas on your cat or if you have any questions about treatment options and grooming appointments.

  • From 2025 there will be a discretionary additional fee for mobile home visit appointments. Prices for this start from £15 and will depend on how much travel is required.

There is no additional fee if you choose to bring your cat to our home salon in Witham.

  • We do not use any form of sedation when grooming cats, as this should only be managed by a vet.

We are able to groom cats using tried-and-tested safe handling, understanding cat's needs and ensuring their wellbeing at all times. We do not 'scruff' cats but ensure they are looked after throughout their groom, taking time to offer breaks so they can remain calm throughout.

If your cat is particularly stressed or aggressive, you might wish to explore calming medicine options, either with your vet or natural remedies, but this is ultimately up to the owner.

  • Most cats do not need to have their coat clipped, whether partial, full clip or lion cut. However, this is needed in some cats particularly where there is severe matting, or the cat is older and unable to groom themselves properly.

  • Having received Master-level training from the Cat Grooming School, London, we are experts in handling cats with 'difficult' behaviour. Using tried-and-testing cat handling techniques, we will be able to groom your cat thoroughly and safely. Most importantly, we aim to reduce stress in cats and make grooming an enjoyable experience for them.

  • Yes we can groom kittens! The earliest we will look to groom will be 4-5 months, depending on the size of the cat and condition of the coat. Starting grooming from a young age is helpful in getting your kitten used to grooming, and ensuring they find the experience relaxing as well as maintaining healthy fur. A reduced price is offered when grooming kittens, but please note this will increase as they grow larger.

Starting grooming younger than 4-5 months is not recommended.

  • From 2025 we will unfortunately not groom any cats aged 16 or older.

There is greater risk associated with grooming older cats due to their thinner skin, tendency to mat and the concern about putting them through a potentially stressful experience. If your cat is aged 16 or older and needs grooming, please reach out to your vets for advice.
